The Toho 30cm Series Yuji Sakai Modeling Collection Godzilla 2001 vinyl figure by X-Plus was first announced in late 2015. It was released in Japan in late February / early March, 2016. It was re-issued by X-Plus for the United States and Canada in June 2017.

This figure is based on Godzilla’s appearance in the 2001 Shusuke Kaneko film, Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, the third movie in the Millennium Series.

Gigantic GMK North American Reissue Delayed

The Gigantic Series Godzilla 2001 Blue Fin Emission Version North American reissue (coming from X-Plus and Diamond Distributors) which was originally planned for release this month in the U.S. has been delayed.

Diamond has changed the release date to “To Be Decided” because as of now, X-Plus is unable to provide a firm shipping date.

Note that it takes a cargo ship about one month to cross the Pacific in good weather; about a month and a half with bad weather.

(The reissue of the Toho 30cm Series Godzilla 1999 is still set to release in a couple of weeks.)

X-Plus Gigantic GMK gets re-issued… AGAIN! This time it’s just for North America. This is yet another chance to add this beast to your collection!

Today, Diamond Distributors made a whopper of an announcement: The Gigantic Series Godzilla 2001 (Blue Dorsal Fin Emission Version) vinyl figure by X-Plus will be getting a North American release.

This figure (sans the blue dorsal fins) was the very first entry in X-Plus’ Gigantic Series which was released in December 2013. It was made available again in unfinished kit form. And, most recently, was reissued in Japan again with translucent dorsal fins (tinted blue) earlier this year. This latest re-issue is licensed for sale in the United States and Canada and is expected to come out in three short months.

This reissue has a suggested retail price of $424.99 and was originally expected to ship in January 2017. It now has a shipping date of “To Be Decided”.

You can preorder the Gigantic Series Godzilla 2001 Blue Dorsal Fin Version vinyl figure at your local comic store and save big on shipping. Tell the guy behind the counter you want to order Item Code: AUG169272.

You will also be able to order this from your favorite online retailer. Just give them time to catch on that it’s available. This news literally came out of nowhere.

Pre-order this now for $378 at Flossie’s Gifts & Collectibles at a discounted price.

X-Plus Godzilla at SDCC; Four More Vinyls for North America Revealed

Get ready, North America. Even more X-Plus is on the way!

Both Diamond and Bluefin, distributors of X-Plus North American releases, have made new reveals this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con. And some of them are really surprising.

Godzilla 12in Series Godzilla 2000: Millennium

It looks like we’re getting another Godzilla 2000 from Diamond. It’s in addition to the 30cm Series Godzilla 1999/2000 already released by X-Plus in December 2013 which is due to be reissued in North America through Diamond in March 2017.

I’ve read (on the Facebook groups) that this vinyl will be based on an old KOC resin kit which came out around the same time the movie did. It seems to be a bit shorter than other figures in the Godzilla 12in Series (Toho 30cm Series) but this could be due to its forward lean in the pose.

The really, really interesting thing about this news is that a Japanese release from X-Plus has not happened yet. This is totally weird and unprecedented.

Will Japan still get it first? Will be a North American release only? Or, could it be that X-Plus is beginning to sync their Japanese releases with their North American releases so that every one everywhere gets one at the same time? I really don’t know, but that would be fucking sweet.

The 30cm Series Godzilla 2014 is now on display at the Diamond booth at SDCC.

It’s actually been planned for quite some time now. In fact, Diamond probably could have been announced it at the same time as they did the ’84, ’92, ’04 and the two Sakai’s. Perhaps they were saving it to make more of a splash at the convention.

Here’s hoping that they reissue the Roaring Version at some point as well.

The Toho 30cm Series Yuji Sakai Modeling Collection Godzilla 2001 is also now on display at the Diamond booth at SDCC.

The first release happened a mere four months ago in Japan and it seems way, way too early for a Diamond Reissue. I’m guessing, though, that it probably won’t be until late 2017 before you can get your hands on it. (If you want it NOW: we still have two of the Japanese originals available at Flossie’s.)

On to Bluefin

Since the Diamond Reissues first showed up, North American collectors have been getting hit on two fronts. Enter Bluefin, and the Great Three-Front War on our wallets.

Bluefin is about to release reissues of the Large Monster Series Biollante and King Ghidorah. They are now on display at Bluefin’s booth at SDCC and are due to be released later this month.

Also on display at the Bluefin booth is the Bandai Gigantic Series Godzilla 1995 (1999°C Version) SDCC Exclusive. (No, it doesn’t light up. That light is coming from the table.)

Now back to the new reveals. The final vinyl surprise from SDCC is…

Yuji Sakai’s Work Masterpiece Art Collection No. 1 (Godzilla 1954 Still Version)

The second of the two biggest surprises from SDCC (kaiju-figure-wise) is an upcoming vinyl version of Yuji Sakai’s Godzilla 1954 Still Version.

And, yep, it’s another train biter.

You probably noticed Godzilla’s funky mug in the photo above. It’s not sloppy work but rather a piece of Godzilla history in three dimensions.

I’m not a Godzilla expert or anything but I believe Mr. Sakai had based this sculpt on a 1954 publicity still photo which had a lot of painting touch-ups performed upon it. Back then they used to paint on photos to change something, correct errors or make something clearer. (It was the early 20th century’s version of Photoshopping.)

Take a look:

Touched up publicity still from Godzilla (1954).
TM & © TOHO CO., LTD.

Sakai’s original resin version is 23.5cm (9.25 inches) tall. So, consider this a Large Monster Series entry.

If you have Sakai’s book Godzilla Dream Evolution, turn to page 82 for four crisp photos of the original resin.

This announcement is particularly interesting because, like the vinyl version of the KOC Godzilla 2000 mentioned at the top of this post, this figure has not yet been released by X-Plus in Japan yet. What’s going on here??

ART COLLECTION?
Also interesting is the name of the line on the back wall: Yuji Sakai’s Work Masterpiece Art Collection.

“Collection”? “No. 1”?

This is totally conjecture on my part, but it sounds to me like they plan to release a series of Mr. Sakai’s more playful work including maquettes, poster versions, busts, etc. There are quite a few to choose from. Again, open up your Godzilla Dream Evolution book and take a look at the possibilities.

If you don’t own the Godzilla Dream Evolution book, we have some available at Flossie’s.

No word on prices or release dates yet. Our on-the-spot reporter, Kevin DeAntonio, will attempt to get some facts on Sunday. If he’s successful, I’ll update this post.

Gigantic Series GMK Godzilla 2001 Gets Re-Issue… and Blue Fins!

Gigantic Series Godzilla 2001 Reissue with blue fins from X-Plus.
X-PLUS

Yes, you’re getting another shot at the Gigantic GMK

Back in December of 2013, X-Plus released the very first figure in the Gigantic Series: Godzilla 2001 (or GMK). This behemoth is 7 1/2 pounds of badassery. It is very detailed with a deep, intricate stylized sculpt which gives it an unparalleled fierce personality. It was later re-issued as an unpainted kit. Since then, it’s scarce presence in the aftermarket comes with a skyrocketed price.

It’s back again.

In yet another joint venture with the Premium Bandai Store, X-Plus is re-issuing this figure (fully assembled)… but with a twist. It’s cold, white dorsal fins will come with a faux light emitting look using translucent vinyl tinged with blue. (To be clear: it does NOT light up. The clear vinyl and paint just gives the impression of light.)

More angles of the Gigantic Series Godzilla 2001 Reissue.
X-PLUS

Also, I could be wrong about this, but there seems to be subtle blue highlights brushed over the body to make it even more unique.

A bonus item will be included which will employ the Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack movie logo. More details on this extra will come later.

This figure will set you back ¥37,800 (currently $344.54 USD).

Pre-orders are being accepted right now at the X-Plus Ric Boy online store and from Premium Bandai. There is a limit of 3 figures per order.

It will NOT be available from other stores (except later in the inevitable gray market and aftermarket).

Shipping is expected to occur in September 2016.

• More information (in Japanese) and photos are available at the Ric Boy site.
