Full Review: Toho 30cm Series Rodan 1964 Vinyl Figure by X-Plus

Full Kaiju Addicts Review: Toho 30cm Series Rodan 1964 vinyl figure by X-Plus.

The Toho 30cm Series Rodan 1964 vinyl figure by X-Plus really does look like it literally flew out of the movie and onto your shelf. It’s based on Rodan’s second film appearance as seen in Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster, 三大怪獣 地球最大の決戦 (1964). What makes this a monster of a figure is its nearly two-foot-long wingspan. It stands in perfect scale with his buddy, the Toho 30cm Series Godzilla 1964. And it is a marvel of sculpting, texture and paint.

It was originally released in Japan way back in 2012. It was reissued for the North American market (through Diamond Distributors) in June 2016 as the Godzilla Kaiju 12in Series Rodan 1964 giving collectors who missed out another chance at grabbing this amazing vinyl.

This review was made with the 2016 North American (Diamond) Reissue.

Pre-orders Open for 12in Series Godzilla 1999 2K Millennium Version 2 from Diamond

After its second showing at NYCC this week (the first showing being at SDCC earlier), this guy shows up for pre-order in North America.

Meet the Godzilla 12in Series Godzilla 1999 2K Millennium Version 2 vinyl figure by X-Plus.

The “Godzilla 12in Series” is the name for the North American releases which are distributed from Diamond. If this had come out in Japan first (and it still might??), it would have been called the “Toho 30cm Series Godzilla 1999 etc.”

This figure originally came from a previously released kit. Many collectors say that it’s from the KOC soft vinyl kit which was released in 1999. But it looks like it may also be based on the resin kit by M-Arts which came out in 2007.

Firstly, you’ll note that this thing looks fucking suh’weet in this photo. It’s not quite as accurate as X-Plus’ first release, but the dynamic pose is a welcome change to the vinyl status quo. But this photo doesn’t tell the whole story.

SHORTY
Diamond lists no height for it yet. But, it’s obviously short as you can see from this photo from NYCC.

PHOTO: JORDAN CHIN

It’s on the far left. I’d be surprised if it even reaches 10 inches tall. It dips well below the Toho 30cm Series Godzilla 1984 which, as you know, is already short for the series. In the figure’s favor is the fact that it’s crouching forward somewhat drastically.

THE LEAN
The figure also seems to have a wicked lean to it. One more pronounced than the one on the 30cm Series Varan. Look at it from any other angle than the one posted on the top of this post and you’ll see it. It leans forward and to its right side.

Will this soft vinyl figure be falling off your shelf in the summer? Will X-Plus weigh it down with some resin or foam?

SO, WHAT’S GOING ON?
I think the next thing which should be discussed here is the fact that X-Plus has never released this in Japan. Does this mean that North America is getting it first? That would be most unexpected and… just bizarre. (But, I wouldn’t complain.)

This isn’t the only one either. Bluefin has been showing off the Yuji Sakai’s Work Masterpiece Art Collection No.1 figure, a 25cm Godzilla 1954 “train biter” sculpted to look like a publicity still which had been so touched up with hand-painted tweaks on the photo that the suit’s face changed. It’s also never had a release in Japan from X-Plus.

So what’s IS going on? Is it possible that X-Plus will in fact put both of these up for preorder in Japan before they get around to making the North American batch? Should you be wary ordering these two from Diamond and Bluefin since they may be available sooner from Hobby Search and AmiAmi?

Or, is it possible that X-Plus’ Japanese and North American releases are about to sync up and get released at the same time?

I just don’t know. And X-Plus won’t talk. They say that since these are being offered by Diamond and Bluefin, that it’s up to those two companies to discuss them. Sigh.

Well… I’m just not feelin’ this one. But, don’t let me ruin it for you. There are plenty of collectors who dig it.

I’d like to show more photos of this figure on display now at NYCC. I’m just waiting for permission from the photographers.

PRE-ORDERS OPEN
The suggested retail price is $160. Expected release: July 2017.

If you are ready to pre-order now, I’ve made this figure available at Flossie’s Gifts & Collectibles. It’s only $139 plus shipping.

Vampire Robots also has preorders open for $160 shipped.

More stores are sure to follow soon as soon as they catch on.

Toho 30cm Series Yuji Sakai Godzilla 1992 (Tanzawa March) vinyl announced

The Toho 30cm Series Yuji Sakai Modelling Collection Godzilla 1992 against a dark sky.
TM & © TOHO CO.,LTD. PHOTOS: X-PLUS

X-Plus and master sculptor Yuji Sakai are teaming up again to bring us yet another fantastic Godzilla vinyl.

News of the Toho 30cm Series Yuji Sakai Modelling Collection Godzilla 1992 Tanzawa March (東宝30cmシリーズ 酒井ゆうじ造形コレクション ゴジラ1992 丹沢進撃 ) vinyl figure surprisingly broke first at Japanese retailer, Hobby Search.

X-Plus’ Ric Boy site has yet to mention it. They have a page for it in the works; it’s just not ready to go live yet.

Toho 30cm Series Yuji Sakai Modelling Collection Godzilla 1992 Tanzawa March vinyl figure by X-Plus.

This sculpt comes from 1992’s Godzilla vs. Mothra (ゴジラvsモスラ). As usual, Sakai sculpted this not only to fit the movie but a particular scene.

After the first battle between Godzilla and Battra at sea, both are sucked into an underwater fissure in the Philippine Trench. Godzilla then swims up a lava stream and emerges from Mount Fuji. From there he marches over the Tanzawa Mountains (丹沢山地) to Yokahama and then finally to Tokyo where he resumes his battle with the big bugs.

A screenshot from Godzilla vs. Mothra, 1992.

This new figure is posed to match a scene during Godzilla’s battle with Self-Defense Force tanks and masers in the Tanzawa mountains. If you have the movie on DVD, set it to play at 1 hour, 16 minutes. That’s the scene.

SIZING UP WITH BATTRA
Yuji Sakai’s original resin version of this figure stands 29.5cm but X-Plus’ vinyl version will be a bit shorter. They had to cast the prototype in wax in order to make a new mold. This process will reduce its height to about 27cm. Because of this, the figure will be a little short next to the Toho 30cm Series Battra Larva. But it should be fine as long as you’re not a scale freak like me. If you are, you’ll need to rely on the original X-Plus 30cm Series Godzilla 1992 for that since its a full 30cm.

DOUBLE DIPPING THE ’92
This is the second time X-Plus will put out a ’92. In 2011, they released their own sculpt, the Toho 30cm Series Godzilla 1992. A North American re-issue of this original figure is due to be released in January 2017. It’s much taller, and far less expensive ($139 at Flossie’s). But the sculpt is no match to the accuracy sculpted into the Sakai version.

Pose comparison with the Yuji Sakai 1991.

SIMILARITIES TO THE ’91
A number of collectors have already remarked that they felt this new Sakai ’92 is too similar to the Sakai ’91 which was released last year. For the more casual Godzilla fans and collectors, I’ll point out some of the differences.

The head angles are different. The chest on the ’92 isn’t as bunchy. The leg stances are different. The tails may seem similar, but they are noticeably different, especially from the side. The ’92’s tail doesn’t rise as high as the ’91’s. The front of the ’92 has a more segmented neck. Very significant from the side is the more natural progression of the dorsal fins on the back as they rise up to the head. On the ’91, there is a very abrupt “step” in this pattern.

This is a classic example of X-Plus giving you more than you asked for or even think you wanted. These figures are super accurate and faithful to the designs of the actual suits, even in ways you didn’t know about.

STANDARD VERSION
Hobby Search has the X-Plus Yuji Sakai Godzilla 1992 Standard Version up for pre-order at ¥23,750 ($233 USD). They say the figure is due for release in late November 2016.

RIC BOY VERSION
A Ric Boy (or Shounen Ric) version is up for preorder at X-Plus’ Ric Boy site. The figure will come with light-up fins and will run you ¥28,944 ($281 USD). Ouch!

The preorder window for Rics closes on October 20, 2016 and you can expect your figure to ship in late November-early December 2016. You can order it here at the Ric Boy store.

Godzilla Dream Evolution book.
DREAM EVOLUTION

If you own a copy of the Godzilla Dream Evolution book featuring all of Sakai’s works, turn to pages 32 and 33. You’ll find a 2-page spread there with 3 photos of this figure.

If you don’t already have a copy of Sakai’s Godzilla Dream Evolution hardback photo book, consider grabbing one. Any future X-Plus collaborations will be in that book allowing you to see the possibilities.

Also, keep in mind the upcoming Yuji Sakai’s Work Masterpiece Art Collection coming soon from X-Plus, and from Bluefin here in the states! This new line will feature Sakai’s works based on Godzilla movie stills, posters and more.

You can get a copy from Amazon for $46.38.
We also have them ready to ship at Flossie’s for $44.99.

September 2016 X-Plus Announcements: Daimajin, Frozen GBG and more Ultras

Daiei 30cm Series Daimajin vinyl figure by X-Plus.

Daiei 30cm Series Daimajin

大映30㎝シリーズ 大魔神 少年リック限定版

X-Plus has released several Daimajin figures in the Large Monster Series in the past. But the great statue has finally stepped into the Daiei 30cm Series!

Daimajin (大魔神) was a film trilogy set in feudal Japan put out by the Daiei Film Company in 1966. All three movies featured a “great demon god” in the form of a statue embedded in the side of a mountain. The actions of evil men soon increase the great statue’s rage and prompts it to come to life and exact its revenge and dish out some badass justice. If you haven’t seen these movies: check them out! Imagine mixing Kurosawa and Harryhausen together. That’s Daimajin!

Accessories and options for the X-Plus 30cm Daimajin.

This new Ric Boy figure will come with an impressive array of features and extras. Included are 5 alternate hands with which to interact with the included sword, metal chain, hook, spike (nail?), a mini Tsurukichi figure and a “god of military arts” face. The shoulder joints, hidden below flaps of armor, can be articulated. And perhaps most impressive of all, the position of the eyes can be changed!

Too many options? Pick them all! Just change the figure every few months and you’ve got a fresh display. Holy shit, okay, really, sign me the hell up!

This figure is a Japanese release and will be sold only in Japan.

Preorders for the Daiei 30cm Series Daimajin will open soon. There is no price to report yet. It is expected to ship in late November.

This new offering seems set to become the ultimate Daimajin figure.

See the 30cm Series Daimajin at the X-Plus Ric Boy site.

X-Plus Gigantic Series Godzilla 1995 (Freeze Version)

ギガンティックシリーズ ゴジラ1995 凍結ver. 少年リック限定商品

Various angles of the Gigantic Series Godzilla 1995 Frozen Version with Super X III.

The X-Plus GBG is back again! Originally released (sans the ice) back in August 2014, it was reissued through Bandai as a special SDCC Exclusive which came with tail already attached. Apparently Japanese collectors have been clamoring for a frozen version in order to relive the amazing climax scene from the final film in the Heisei series.

The new Gigantic Series “Burning Godzilla” is a bit of fire and ice. It’s basically the same figure we all know but with splashes (sprays?) of frosty white to represent the icing from the JSDF‘s freezing weapons.

FROSTBITE?
It seems this release is getting a cold reception in the West. Apparently many of us think it was just doused with a can of spray snow. But is it a simple rehash? Think of it what you will. I see it as simply another option for collectors and yet another opportunity for those who missed out on the previous releases. I actually wouldn’t mind having one myself.

This exclusive Ric Boy version comes with a mini Super X III which is about 11cm (4.3 inches) long.

LIMITED TO 300
This figure will be limited to a run of only 300 and it seems at this time it will be available only from X-Plus’ Ric Boy online store.

This figure is a Japanese release and will be sold only in Japan.

This figure will run you ¥40,824 ($402 USD). Just remember to add about $100 to that for shipping from Japan.

I do not believe there will be a Standard version available. This Ric is expected to become available for preorder on September 21. The final product is expected to ship in November.

See this figure on the X-Plus Ric Boy site.
See my review for the original Gigantic Series Godzilla 1995 release for more details on the sculpt.

New Ultraman Ace and Taro fare

Ultraman Ace Showdown Set and Cosmo Liquid figures by X-Plus.

The Large Monster Series Ultraman Ace “Space Showdown” Set (大怪獣シリーズ ウルトラマンエース 異次元空間対決セット 少年リック限定商品) will include both our hero along with a Yapool (Yapuru ヤプール) figure. There will also be a stand for Ace. It will run you ¥19,980 ($196 USD). I suspect this will be available only from the X-Plus Ric Boy site. Preorders are open now and will end September 26. The set is expected to ship in November.

The Large Monster Series Cosmo Liquid (大怪獣シリーズ コスモリキッド) hails from the Ultraman Taro series (1973-1974). The X-Plus version stands about 25cm tall and will run you ¥13,824 ($135 USD). Preorders are open now at the X-Plus Ric Boy site through September 26 and it’s expected to ship in November.

X-Plus 30cm Series Kiryu (Diamond Reissue) Hits Stores Next Week!

X-Plus Kiryu Vinyl Figure Review.

The Toho 30cm Series Kiryu (2003) 東宝30cmシリーズ 「3式機龍(2003版)」 vinyl was first released by X-Plus in 2013. It was “re-issued” in the Summer of 2014 as a polyresin Real Master Collection version.

Hold on, there’s more. In the summer of 2014, the vinyl was released yet again. This time with an alternate battle damaged head and other tweaks.

X-Plus’ take on the Machine Dragon is back yet again. This time as the Godzilla Kaiju 12in Series Mechagodzilla 2003. This new batch is strictly for the North American market and will be distributed stateside via Diamond Distributors.

Pre-orders opened back in August of 2015. It’s been a long, long wait. Now, it’s finally on its way.

Diamond will begin shipping the new Kiryu figures to retailers on Monday, September 19. If you’ve placed an order from an online store, you should be getting a charge soon, and big box in the mail!

If you ordered from Flossie’s Gifts & Collectibles: your order will be charged early next week and shipping will begin on Thursday, September 22.

If you ordered from your local comic store: time to give them a call!

X-Plus Announces 30cm Series Godzilla 1984 Shinjuku Decisive Battle Version Ric Boy

Toho 30cm Series Godzilla 1984 Shinjuku Decisive Battle Version vinyl figure by X-Plus.
THE NEW SHINJUKU VERSION (LEFT) AND THE ORIGINAL RELEASE (RIGHT). PHOTO: X-PLUS

The Toho 30cm Series Godzilla 1984 (東宝30cmシリーズ 「ゴジラ(1984)」), originally released in 2013 is getting another reissue with tweaks.

X-Plus recently announced the upcoming Toho 30cm Series Godzilla 1984 – Shinjuku Decisive Battle Version. And it’s coming with two significant new features.

The figure will come with a light gimmick. The dorsal spines will glow with light when you connect the “battery box” to it. Contrary to early online discussions: all three rows of fins will emit light.

And, the figure will have an alternate paint scheme. I’m really not sure what they’ve done other than add dusty highlights. I’ve read online that the skin is darker but going by the photos, it looks the same as the original to me (except for those highlights a plenty). The dorsal fins are also different in that they aren’t as white as the ones on the original. Perhaps this is due to the material being translucent vinyl.

This figure will be available as a Ric Boy only and preorders can be made only on the X-Plus Ric Boy site. There will not be a standard version.

Preorders will be taken until August 30. It will run you ¥20,000 (about $199 USD).

Apparently this figure will have a limited production run and all order may not be filled. There is a 2-figure limit for each household.

If you are a Facebook regular and know Mike Johnson and Jamie Davies, this is definitely a figure you’d need their help getting!

It’s expected to ship in late September / early October.

DIAMOND RE-ISSUE OF ORIGINAL OUT IN NOVEMBER
Note: a North American reissue of this figure in its original state (sans the light gimmick and highlights) will be released in the United States and Canada (through Diamond Distributors) in November 2016. It has an MSRP of $160 but will be available for less from most of your favorite U.S. X-Plus stores.
