Full Review: Large Monster Series Godzilla 1995 Vinyl Figure by X-Plus

Kaiju Addicts Full Review of the Toho Large Monster Series Godzilla 1995 vinyl figure by X-Plus.

The Toho Large Monster Series Godzilla 1995 by X-Plus was released in September 2015, not with the expected accolades and praise but with controversy and sometimes even ire. The main reason for this was a muddled head sculpt, so smothered in paint that it more resembled an inexpensive Bandai figure than a high-end X-Plus. I admit I was one of the first to get really disappointed.

But, so much of the Large Monster Series Burning Godzilla is good. REALLY good. That’s why I was so pissed off at that face peering at me from inside the box. Why did something so good have to get ruined with that face? I’ve since found that I just had to get over it and focus on the positive.

I’m kind of over it. It is what it is. There is still a LOT to like about it. And, it’s not like we’re getting another DesuGoji any time soon. So if you want Burning Godzilla in your collection — your proper, movie-accurate collection — you’ll have to pick this one up.

X-Plus starts taking orders for Destroyah and Gamera 1995

Toho Large Monster Series Destoroyah Vinyl figure by X-Plus.

X-Plus has just opened the preorder window on the Toho Large Monster Series Destoroyah (東宝大怪獣シリーズ デストロイア) just in time to make it in for the 20th Anniversary of Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (ゴジラvsデストロイア)!

I am literally at a loss for words. Just LOOK at that sculpt! This thing is OFF the Awesome Charts.

The figure is 34cm (13.3 inches) tall and they made a point to mention that even though this figure is a part of the Large Monster Series, it easily takes up the same space as a 30cm series figure. (Although, technically, a 30cm Series Destroyah would be even bigger.)

The X-Plus Large Monster Series Godzilla 1995 with the new Destoroyah figure.

Speaking of size and scale, they showed an image of the upcoming red baddie with the Large Monster Series Godzilla 1995 which was released last month. The scale between the two figures look to be about right. But, since the Godzilla ’95 is significantly taller than other Goji’s in the series, these two, technically, are out of scale with the rest of the family. This may not be an issue for you if you plan to pair these two fantastic figures up. Destroyah is going to demand more airspace than most other figures and so you’ll likely be finding a separate place to display this famous confrontation.

Rear shot of the X-plus Destroyah giving a good shot of the wings.

Destroyah’s four wings will apparently be made with injection molded hard PVC, just like both Mothra Imagos. I think I really like that. These wings will be impervious to deformation caused by summer heat.

They will come detached in the box and will need to be inserted. I am really, really curious how this is going to work. I wonder if the connection points will also be made of PVC nestled inside each wing as on the Large Monster Series King Ghidorah figure. Here’s to hoping they’re a snug fit.

If you are worried that the soft vinyl connection points on Destroyah’s back may not be up to the task of supporting the wings during the hotter months, know that this figure will be reinforced with urethane foam on the inside of the body (just like the tail on the Gigantic Series Godzilla 1995).

Also, in an effort to keep the figure balanced against the outstretched wings, the lower legs will be filled with heavy polyresin. X-Plus really thought this one through!

The detail of the blood vessels in the eyes will be reproduced with decals just like the 25cm Series Godzilla 1995.

The polyresin Destoroyah Aggregate Crab extra which comes as the Ric Boy Extra.

The Ric Boy version of this figure will come with a Destoroyah Aggregate Form extra. It’s 14cm (5.5 inches — pretty impressive) tall and it has INSANE detail. This extra figure will be made of hard polyresin since, as they mention on their site, it can’t be reproduced properly in vinyl.

As you know, polyresin is prone to breaking easily. And a design like this, with long, spikey bits is just screaming to break. So take care when finding a place to display it. Assuming, of course, you get it in one piece in the mail. X-Plus says that this extra will be “packaged separately from the Destoroyah (full body)”. I guess that means its getting its own box. I just hope they’re confident they found a good way to package and ship it. The polyresin Monster Museum Ultraman pieces, though packaged very well, often arrived with broken pieces. And those were much smaller!

If you’re going for the Ric, have some super glue on standby. Here’s hoping you won’t need it.

The Toho Large Monster Series Destoroyah Ric Boy will be available to order until October 5, 2015 and is slated to ship out in late November / early December. It will ship by itself. (If you order this and the RMC Gamera 1995, you’ll get separate shipments.)

The Ric Boy version will cost you ¥30,888 (currently $255.88 USD).

See more on this figure at the Ric Boy site here.

Order the Ric at the Ric Store here.

Yes, there is a standard version. You can grab one at Hobby Search for $187.55 or at AmiAmi for $183.88.

So, get your Large Monster Series Godzilla 1995 figure warmed up. He’s getting company!

Also celebrating a 20th anniversary is Gamera 1995. This figure is now getting an introduction into the Real Master Collection (polyresin). It’s limited to 100 pieces and sales will be restricted to three per person. It’s available to preorder at the Ric Store until October 5 and will run you ¥27,648 (currently $229 USD).

Happy Birthday to Godzilla, Destroyah and Gamera! お誕生日おめでとうございます!!

X-Plus announces Large Monster Series Godzilla 1995

Angles of the X-Plus 25cm Godzilla 1995 vinyl figure.

X-Plus has just announced the Toho Large Monster Series Godzilla 1995 (東宝大怪獣シリーズ 「ゴジラ1995」 少年リック限定版) vinyl figure on their Ric Boy site.

The figure is listed as being 26cm (10.2 inches) tall, although further down the page they say that it will be between 25 and 26cm.

Note: these shots are of an early version of the figure and the obvious seams will likely be filled and concealed on the main production run. Also note the OUTSTANDING appearance of the burning patch on the figure’s chest. It has the same AWESOME look as the Gigantic Series Godzilla 1995. DAMN, THIS LOOKS GOOD! (Again, click the above photo for a really large look at a higher res version. Take a good look at the head sculpt while you do!

The Godzilla 1995 Ric Boy will come with a light gimmick. All of the fiery patches on his chest, belly and thighs will ignite with LED light. But it doesn’t end there! Godzilla’s eyes will also be ablaze when you flick that power switch! Even though it hasn’t been shown, X-Plus tells me “of course” the fins will light up as well.

Additional angles on the new X-Plus Godzilla 1995, including a view of the light gimmick in action.

This figure will likely take top spot as X-Plus figure with the most spectacular light gimmick. (I’m sure this is one figure many collectors will be turning on a LOT more than other light-up figures.)

Perhaps the extra lights and work required to insert them is part of the reason for this figure’s INSANELY high price tag. The Ric will set you back ¥25,920 (currently $206.35). Yeah, you read that right. It’s going to be a 25cm Series figure with a 30cm Series price tag! (Price won’t stop me, though. It WILL be mine!)

If you’re not ready to dish out over 200 bucks (plus shipping from Japan) you could opt for the Standard Version which X-Plus tells me WILL be available and that they’re working on the final details of those right now. No word on prices for those yet. Keep checking sites like Hobby Search and AmiAmi.

The official pre-order deadline for the Ric Boy version June 15. If you’re set up with an account at the Ric Store, you can order it here. The figure is expected to ship late July/early August.

And don’t forget: this Godzilla 1995 vinyl can be paired up with the Toho Large Monster Series Destroyah which will come out later this year!
