X-Plus has just announced a reissue of the Yuji Sakai Godzilla ’89. But, unlike the original, this version will come with a closed mouth.
The Toho 30cm Series Yuji Sakai Modeling Collection Godzilla (1989) “Osaka Landing” Closed Mouth Version — yes, that’s 14 words — is now up for preorder.
The sculpt recreates a pose taken directly from the 1989 film Godzilla vs. Biollante. It stands at 11.25 inches and is 19.5 inches long.
RIC EXCLUSIVE VERSION
The Ric Boy will come with light-up fins AND a mini Super X2 vehicle. Photos of the Super X2 are not available at this time, so we don’t know if this is a reissue of the same piece that came with the Large Monster Series Godzilla 1989 or if this will be a new sculpt. I will update this post as soon as I know.
The Ric Exclusive version is available from the Japanese X-Plus site for ¥28,620 (currently $251 USD).
If you know how to do it, you can order one direct from X-Plus here.
Preorders for the Ric Boy will end October 30, 2018.
Yes, there will be a standard version available at the usual Japanese retail stores. It’s available to order from:
This figure is expected to be released in December 2018.
The original version of this figure came out in October 2014 and it was the very first entry into the Yuji Sakai Modeling Collection.
This figure can seem a little weird when viewed from the front, but keep in mind that the pose was taken directly from a shot in Godzilla vs. Biollante during the Osaka landing scene.
What I really, really love about this vinyl, though, is the side view with its long, straight tail. X-Plus figures don’t do this very often so it’s a treat when they do. And this particular figure looks just f’n awesome.
Newer collectors may be asking ‘what’s all the fuss about a closed mouth?’
A closed mouth is also a treat when it comes to collecting X-Plus, as the overwhelming majority of Godzilla vinyls come in full roar. The occasional closed-mouth figure is a break from that. And it really does make Godzilla look all the more badass.
I don’t think this figure warrants double dipping though. If you have the original, you already have most of what makes this vinyl so cool. Yes, I do admit, the closed mouth looks insanely good on this ’89. Thing is, it looks just as good on the Sakai 1991 and 1992. In this case, an open mouth is the treat.
But if you’ve not added any X-Plus Sakai sculpts to your collection yet, I highly recommend you grab this new one. You really need this badass, closed-mouth face on your shelf.
Also, this figure makes a great shelf companion with the X-Plus Large Monster Series Biollante. While not completely in scale (it’s a little bigger), it actually looks better than when paired with the Large Monster Series Godzilla 1989.
